‘Appropriation of the iconic Malcolm X phrase, in the last year of his life.’
The phrase is translation of a sentence used in French intellectual Jean-Paul Sartre’s play Dirty Hands
The September 1964 issue of Ebony dramatized Malcolm X’s defiance of threats from the NOI (after leaving the Nation of Islam). By publishing a photograph of him holding an M1 carbine while peering out a window.
